For Your Interest in the Thornybush Game Reserve
       



Please Remember the following when visiting Shumbalala Game Lodge:

  •  
 Your camera and video camera - you are welcome to take as many photos as you wish during game drives.
  •  
 A pair of binoculars are provided for you in each suite for your enjoyment.
  •  
 Walking Shoes should you wish to go on a game walk.
  •  
 Sunscreen and bathing suit during the summer months is essential. Some guests also enjoy the poolside during other seasons as temperature remain moderate throughout the year.
  •  
 Clothing - please refer to our suggested clothing for the different seasons in the weather summary below.
  •  
 Malaria is found in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo and thus includes the vicinity you will be visiting. Malaria is not much of a risk in the winter months. Although the incidence of malaria is rare, it would be best to take adequate precautions if you choose to visit these areas. We do however stress that Thornybush Reserve is a low risk malaria area and incidents are very rare.

The cheapest, safest and most effective measures against malaria are physical barriers, such as a mosquito net, (which is provided in your suite) and the use of a good insect repellent (also provided). If you decide to take malaria prophylaxis, it is essential that you take the drugs according to the directions on the package insert. It is advisable to consult a medical professional first – please also take note that expectant mothers should avoid malaria medication.








Weather

Due to the location and average temperatures of the area Shumbalala Game Lodge can be visited throughout the year. Although winters could be cooler during game drives it has the added advantage of more successful game viewing (as the bush is not that dense). In contrast the summer months with its lush green bush and hot temperatures is a privilege to endure!

Summer - November to March


  •  
 Average Temperatures: Ranging between a minimum of 20°C, 68 F and a maximum of 35°C, 95 F. However this temperature can soar another 5°C higher at it's peak making it very hot and humid during mid summer.
  •  
 The Advantages: For those enjoying very hot weather, this is the time to travel and enjoy the poolside. Lush green bush with the abundance of animals and their young, migrating bird species and an abundance of water makes for good photo opportunities.
  •  
 The Disadvantages: Can be very hot and humid. The Lush green bush can limit visibility of game at times. Rain can occur during game drives but does not limit the game drives as vehicles are covered by a canopy for your protection.
  •  
 Suggested Clothing: Lightweight comfortable clothing, preferably no dark colours to attract the summer sun, short sleeved clothing is strongly advised, sunscreen essential and a hat preferable, comfortable shoes.



Autumn - April to May


  •  
 Average Temperatures: Ranging between a minimum of 19°C, 66 F and a maximum of 32°C, 89 F the weather is moderate but still warm, cooling down in the evenings.
  •  
 The Advantages: The weather is generally very enjoyable and not as hot and humid as during the summer months. Generally no rain expected and although the bush is still green, visibility improves.
  •  
 The Disadvantages: None.
  •  
 Suggested Clothing: Lightweight clothing with a light jacket for game drives, short sleeved clothing can still be worn, comfortable shoes.



Winter - June to August


  •  
 Average Temperatures: Ranging between a minimum of 10°C, 50 F and a maximum of 25°C, 77 F the weather is moderate but still warm, cooling down in the evenings.
  •  
 The Advantages: Game viewing is very good (best visibility) and concentrated around the warterholes (including the one at the camp). No rain during this time.
  •  
 The Disadvantages: Before sunrise and after sunset the game drives are generally cold (special surprise arrangements are made to ensure the game drives are enjoyed).
  •  
 Suggested Clothing: Long sleeved clothing with a jacket for game drives, short sleeve clothing can still be worn mid day, comfortable shoes.



Spring - September to October


  •  
 Average Temperatures: Ranging between a minimum of 16°C, 60 F and a maximum of 30°C, 86 F the weather is very enjoyable and a good time to visit. No rain.
  •  
 The Advantages: No rain during this period. Game viewing is very good as the bush is sparse in expectation of the coming summer rains - as indicated by the trees starting to bloom.
  •  
 The Disadvantages: Can be more windy during this time.
  •  
 Suggested Clothing: Lightweight clothing with a light jacket for game drives, short sleeved clothing can still be worn, comfortable shoes.
